Prevention of Blindness: Provides eye care assistance for medically and financially eligible applicants. Services may include eye examinations, comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, surgery, hospitalization, glasses, glaucoma medications and artificial eyes. Also, provides free public eye screenings and comprehensive eye care to eligible applicants.

Description

The Blind Pension program was established in 1921 and is financed entirely by state funds. This program provides assistance for blind persons who do not qualify under the Supplemental Aid to the Blind law and who are not eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits. Each eligible person receives a monthly cash grant of $541, as well as state funded medical assistance. The Supplemental Aid to the Blind (SAB) program is operated in conjunction with the Blind Pension program. Eligible individuals receive a monthly cash grant up to and including $718.00, as well as MO HealthNet Coverage.

Missouri Blind Pension - 18 years old or older - US Citizen or eligible non-citizen - Does not own personal property worth more than $20,000 - Does not have a sighted spouse who provides support - Is determined to be totally blind as defined by law (up to 5/200 or visual field of less than 5 degrees) - Is of good moral character - Must be ineligible for Supplemental Aid to the Blind - Is willing to receive medical treatment or operation to cure blindness if available, unless 75 years or older - Is not a resident of a public, private or endowed institution except a public medical medical institution - Is ineligible to receive federal Supplemental Security Income benefits Missouri Supplemental Aid to the Blind (SAB) - Is 18 years old or older - US Citizen or eligible non-citizen - Does not own personal property worth more than $20,000 - Does not have parents living in Missouri, nor a sighted spouse who can provide support - Is determined to be totally blind as defined by law (up to 5/200 or visual field of less than 5 degrees) - Is not a resident of a public, private or endowed institution except a public medical institution - Is in need of assistance due to lack of sufficient income to meet basic needs - Must apply for Supplemental Security Income
