Lifeguard Training

Programs that provide instruction for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills that will enable them to respond effectively to aquatic emergencies. Training includes surveillance skills, rescue skills, first aid and CPR, and professional lifeguarding responsibilities such as appropriate interaction with the public and managing uncoopertive patrons. Most programs require that participants pass a 500 yard swim using crawl, side and back strokes; and demonstrate rescue skills. Certificates are provided to people who successfully complete the course.

Swimming Safety Education

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety when swimming in the ocean, a lake, a river, a pond or a public or private swimming pool; engaging in water sports such as surfing or water skiing; or when using a spa, hot tub or whirlpool. Topics may include child drowning prevention, safety barrier guidelines for home pools and spas; diving safety; pool rules; hot tub risk factors; water quality assurance; basic water rescue techniques for oneself or others; life jackets, wet suits and other protective gear; protection against and treatment of hypothermia; swimming in undertows, rip tides and other strong currents; inshore holes; "sneaker" waves; dangerous beach and surf conditions; and sharks, jellyfish and other sea denizens.
