Railroad Museums

Institutions that acquire, preserve, research and exhibit permanent and/or traveling collections of artifacts which relate to the history of the railroad and rail travel. Included may be documents which trace the development of the railroads, either generally or in a particular region, and the lives of the people who built them; displays explaining the how a steam engine functions; historical railroading photographs; memorabilia associated with famous railroad personages; model trains and railroads; replicas of passenger stations, railway yards, engine sheds or other railroad venues; railroad art; and a wide variety of machinery and railway equipment including steam and diesel locomotives, electric trains, cabooses, dining cars, boxcars, rail coaches, streetcars, trolleys, cable cars and maintenance-of-way equipment. Train rides may also be available.
