Donated Specialty Items

Animal Food/Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept pet food, water and food dishes, leashes, crates and other pet-related supplies, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other nonprofit organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve.

Building Materials/Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept paint, siding, lighting fixtures, hardware, doors, windows and other construction materials and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to community-based organizations that will use them in housing renovation or other community revitalization projects.

Clothing Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand clothing, repair the items if necessary, and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, donate it to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell it to raise money for agency programs.

Drinking Water Donation Programs

Programs that accept bottled water for distribution to people whose own water is undrinkable due to a ruptured water main, water purification plant problems or other disruptions in the community water supply; to vulnerable communities (especially people who are homeless) in periods of extreme heat as a protection against dehydration; to firefighters, cleanup crews or other people who are responding to a disaster; or to others who have no access to potable drinking water.

Food Donation Programs

Programs that accept canned food and other food resources and keep the food for use in their own programs or donate it to food banks, food pantries, meal programs and other community-based food programs for distribution to the people they serve.

Gift Card Donation Programs

Programs that accept gift cards or certificates for distribution to the people they serve. Gift cards are redeemable for goods or services and include those that can be redeemed at specific retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations, as well as prepaid phone cards and debit cards issued by banks.

Household Goods Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand furniture, appliances, kitchenware, linens, cleaning supplies and other consumer products for use in the household, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own programs, donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell them to raise money for agency programs.

Leisure Equipment/Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand equipment that is used for leisure time pursuits, repair the items if necessary, and keep them for use in their own programs, donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell them to raise money for agency programs.

Medical Equipment/Assistive Technology Donation Programs

Programs that accept assistive technology equipment (i.e., equipment, appliances and assistive aids for people with disabilities), sickroom equipment, medical bandages, respiratory aids and other medical supplies that are required by people who are convalescing following surgery or illness, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other community-based organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve.

Mobile Device Donation Programs

Programs that accept portable computing, communications or entertainment devices, refurbish them if necessary, adapt them for special uses, as desired, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other community-based organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve. Mobile devices may include personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld game consoles, digital cameras, portable media players, e-book readers, cell phones, pagers and personal navigation devices (PDNs).

Natural Hair/Wig Donation Programs

Programs that accept donations of new or very slightly used wigs (or hair which can be used to make wigs) for people who have lost their own hair through radiation treatments for cancer or other health problems.

Office Equipment/Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand office equipment, supplies, furniture and other office products, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other community-based organizations.

Personal/Grooming Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept cosmetics, shaving utensils, beard trimming equipment, hygienic supplies and other personal care items and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve. Also included are programs that assemble a collection of personal/grooming supplies for women and/or men and make the materials available to people in the community who need them.

Plant/Gardening Materials Donation Programs

Programs that accept indoor or outdoor plants, seed, sod, soil, gravel, stones, fertilizer, outdoor lighting, planters or other materials that can be used for gardening or landscaping purposes. Materials may be kept for use in their own program, donated to other community-based organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve, or sold to raise money for agency programs.

Safety Equipment Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand safety equipment, refurbish it if necessary, and keep it for use in their own programs, or donate it to other community-based organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve. Included is equipment that people can use for increased protection while engaging in high risk activities such as motorcycle riding, driving, boating or flying; or devices that sound an alarm or facilitate rapid access in case of an emergency.

School Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept notebooks, pens, pencils, calculators, book bags and other school supplies and keep them for use in their own programs or donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

Tools/Equipment Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand tools and equipment that are necessary for farming, gardening, home maintenance, employment or other purposes, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own programs, or donate them to other community-based organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve.

Vehicle Donation Programs

Nonprofit organizations that accept vehicles of any kind as donations from individuals who want a tax write-off. In most cases, donated vehicles are sold to raise funds for the organization, but some programs repair the vehicles, if necessary, and keep them for their own use, give them to individuals or families who have no means of private transportation or donate them to other nonprofit organizations for use in their program or for distribution to the people they serve.
